This captivating late 18th-century Pahari miniature, by the legendary Garhwal school painter and poet, Mola Ram beautifully depicts the courageous heroine who braves a terrifying, stormy night to meet her secret lover. What makes Mola Ram’s execution brilliant is his vivid manifestation of her internal psychological dread through the dark, threatening forest, with a golden lightning bolt tearing across the pitch-black sky, and white snakes coiling around tree trunks and slithering beneath her bare feet. This painting is bound to remind the viewer of the defiant heroine, Vasantasena, from Shudraka’s ancient Sanskrit play "Mrichchhakatika", where Vasantasena braves flash floods and societal dangers to reach her impoverished lover, Charudatta..
