This painting (The Heroine Going to Meet Her Lover at an Appointed Place) is attributed to the celebrated Garhwal painter Mola Ram, who was one of the most important artists and poets of the Garhwal school of Pahari painting. The attribution was made by Balak Ram Sah, a descendant of the artist. Mola Ram worked in the royal court of Garhwal and is remembered for bringing emotional depth to Pahari miniature painting. The theme of the Abhisarika Nayika comes from classical Indian texts, especially Nayika-Bheda, found in texts like the Natyashastra. Mola Ram depicts a heroine who fearlessly ventures out to meet her beloved despite dangers, darkness, and social restrictions. The painting presents a night scene filled with mystery and emotion. At the centre stands a young woman dressed in a rich red skirt and a delicate blue veil adorned with golden details. She appears to be looking at a golden anklet that has slipped from her foot while she was walking. The dark forest surrounding her creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and danger. Tall trees fade into the darkness, while several snakes move across the ground, emphasizing the risks she faces. A sharp bolt of lightning illuminates the sky above, adding tension to the composition. Despite these threatening elements, the woman remains calm and determined. The contrast between her luminous figure and the dark background enhances her beauty and makes her the emotional focus of the work. This painting is a poetic representation of love, courage, and unwavering commitment.
