'Abhiman', by Hemendranath Mazumdar, is a classic example from Mazumdar's favourite topic to paint: the life and love of the women of Bengal. Painted in the classical European style, the artwork portrays a hidden woman covered in her own melancholia. She is depicted as bent in longing, presumably in love and heartbreak. This message is punctuated by the symbol of the white flower, representing love and purity. Mazumdar, with technical realism and soft sensuality in this work, creates a master portrait of rural Bengali melancholy and struggle.
