The Najaf family is said to be a prominent artistic family throughout the 19th century, in particular Najaf Ali, or Aqa Najaf, who was considered exceptional in the field of lacquer painting. This field had become much more prominently-known in Persian art by the Qajar period, likely due to the attention from Europeans at the time, but was still better known from the far East of Asia than Persia until the late 20th century. Although this mirror case is attributed to Najaf Ali with an estimated creation period of 1867-1868, it is possible that it belonged to one of his students, due to Ali's estimated death being the early 1860s, something that is subject to debate. This mirror case depicts an incredibly detailed scene likely from the Qajar court itself, or otherwise a high-standing social circle, as was expected in the earlier years of the Qajar period where paintings of this level were commissioned by the court. We can observe the subjects that were common in Ali's work: animals, people and landscapes. Separated by the landscape behind them and the seating arrangement where they are above the majority, one can deduce there are at least two leading men in conversation, one with an animal is likely a dog or otherwise large cat. By clothing alone, the rest of the people appear to be servants, sharing what appears to be a uniform with few variations. The lacquer work, which likely had acted as a varnish for the piece in between layers of watercolour, comes through more prominently through the carpets and flooring of the scene, where the patterns appear to have a stark sense of dimension to them while the rest of the scene is more flat.
