I interpret Piraji Sagara’s A Fish as a powerful exploration of the relationship between human beings, nature, spirituality, and traditional craft. The artwork transforms the simple form of a fish into something symbolic and almost sacred. The combination of the fish-like body, human hands, face, and halo creates a mysterious figure that appears to exist between the natural and spiritual worlds. The materials used are especially important to my interpretation. The burnt and carved wood, beads, pins, and natural grain are not simply decorative elements but contribute to the meaning of the work. The grain of the wood becomes part of the fish’s body, while the carved and burnt surface gives the artwork a sense of age, labour, and transformation. The beads add colour and connect the work to traditional Indian decorative and craft practices. The raised hands can be interpreted in different ways—as a gesture of blessing, protection, warning, or prayer. Similarly, the halo-like form above the figure gives it a spiritual or devotional presence. The fish may also recall Matsya and broader Indian traditions in which animals and nature carry symbolic meaning. Overall, I think A Fish represents Sagara’s belief that modern art and traditional craftsmanship can exist together. By combining ancestral wood-carving traditions with a modern and abstract visual language, he creates an artwork that connects nature, mythology, spirituality, and cultural heritage. The work ultimately suggests that traditional materials and practices can continue to hold meaning within modern artistic expression.
