While being depicted with the same technique, the horses are portrayed to be in very different states. For the thin horse, its pelvis and ribcage can be seen protruding from its skin, and its mane is quite sparse. With its head drooped and four legs barely lifting off the ground, the thin horse seems rather tired. In contrast, the fat horse has its head lifted, and it seems healthy and energetic. It has a rounded belly and is noticeably more robust than the thin horse. Donning a thick and luxurious mane and tail, the fat horse struts forward in a lively trot. Compared to the thin horse whose reins wrap around its head, the reins of the fat horse are loosened. For the painting, one interpretation is that the fat and thin horses are used as political metaphors for the officials at the time. The thin horse represents the diligent official, who is restrained by their sense of duty, of which is represented by the rein around their neck. Despite, or perhaps because of their hardworking nature, they are exhausted and emaciated. The fat horse, on the other hand, is unrestrained and nourished, growing fat and strong by ignoring the rules and exploiting the people.
The striking contrast between the two horses transforms this seemingly simple composition into a powerful reflection on society, morality and human nature. Rather than celebrating physical beauty alone, Ren Renfa uses the condition of each horse to expose the unequal realities hidden beneath outward appearances. The exhausted, emaciated horse conveys the burden of relentless duty, sacrifice and discipline, while the well-fed horse embodies privilege gained through comfort rather than merit. Their opposing postures quietly suggest that prosperity is not always the reward of honesty, nor does hardship necessarily indicate failure. This subtle irony gives the painting an enduring relevance that extends far beyond its historical context.
