Farrukh Beg’s ca. 1589 Baburnama folio “Drunken Babur Returns to Camp at Night” reimagines the Mughal Emperor Babur’s memories of his past life as a drunkard who wandered from tavern to tavern. Depicting the inebriated ruler on horseback but almost devoid of color, the page blends the impreciseness of the author’s memories with the art of an era. The manuscript’s illustration makes the narrative more visually engaging by complementing the text using the calligraphy art of the Persian language set in the landscape of Chinese-Persian style.
