A painting that stands aprt from all the grandeur artworks, a painting that speaks in volume without words. One such painting created by Mukund Naqqash at the order of the Mughal emperor, Akbar showcases a wandering dervish with a pet. Dervish were members of Sufism movement that prevailed in Islam traditions. A dervish of Qalandariyya belonged to an ascetic life founded in Khorasan, Central Asia. As visible in the painting, the wanderer/dervish does not have much belongings but rather seems to be contend with his instrument, barefooted with a animal skin shrug to protect him from harsh winters. It is said that Akbar was very much enticed with Sufism and its principles of rejecting social norms, regulations in order to seek the universal truth.
