Sheng Mou
Legendary Artist
Sheng Mou (also spelled Sheng Mao, courtesy name Zizhao) was a Chinese landscape painter of the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368). His exact birth and death dates are unknown, but he is generally placed between about 1310 and the 1360s. He was born in Lin'an, today's Hangzhou, and later lived in Weitang, near Jiaxing in Zhejiang, where he was a neighbor of the famous painter Wu Zhen. He learned painting from Chen Lin, who had studied under Zhao Mengfu. Sheng Mou painted landscapes, people, and birds and flowers in a delicate style with soft, beautiful colors. He was a professional painter who combined the elegance of scholar painting with the skill of a working studio. His works are now kept in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Palace Museum in Taipei, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum.
