Juan Francisco de Aguilera is a significant figure from 18th-century Mexico who contributed to the religious painting tradition. Unfortunately, very little information is known about Aguilera's birth, early life, training, and death, with even the place of his origin being a subject of debate. Therefore, Aguilera's importance rests principally on a small group of signed or securely attributed paintings. The best documentary evidence places Aguilera in Mexico City around 1722 CE, when he was associated with an informal workshop or academy of training with the brothers Juan Rodriguez Juarez and Nicolas Rodriguez Juarez.
