As a celebrated 19th-century academic painter, Felix Parra transforms his artworks into visual records showcasing the suffering of the indigenous people of Mexico and the subjugation they faced from the Spaniards. The image above is an intimate glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of Parra's art practice. It shows him in his studio in Mexico City. Although trained within the European academic tradition, Parra recognised the need to search for a national artistic identity in post-independence Mexico, with the genre of historical painting serving as a suitable medium for this objective.
