Artistic Journey
Francesco Hayez was a Venetian and was born to a poor fisherman. He initially worked as an apprentice under his uncle, Giovanni Binasco, and later on studied painting under Francesco Maggiotto. He had a lengthy life of studying art at various institutions. In 1808, he attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, and then he studied at the Accademia di San Luca. In Rome, he yet again studied Antiquity. Finally, after cruising Rome and Naples, Hayez came back to Venice, where he devoted himself to paintings that better suited his style. For example, he painted the portrait of the Cicognara family. Furthermore, here he was involved in paintings for various palazzi. He was greatly influenced by the 15th-century Venetian artists Giovanni Bellini and Vittore Carpaccio. He won fame in the Milanese artistic circles. His mature painting style had significant portrayals of political allusions- the “Lampugnani’s Conspiracy”.
Themes
Hayez was able to establish himself at the centre of artistic and intellectual life.
Although in his young years he had explored biblical and fictional themes, in his mature years he came to display a keen interest in Italian history. He depicted Political and social figures and themes in historical settings. He also worked on human emotions and intimate subjects.
Signature Works
Some of the signature works of Francesco Hayez are “The Kiss”, “The Last Kiss of Romeo and Juliet,” and “Meditation on the History of Italy.” The first two paintings depicted unadulterated human emotions- passion and drama. In contrast, the last one represents the political and historical struggles of Italy.
Cultural Influences
Hayez helped shape Italian culture by fueling the Risorgimento nationalism and historical Romanticism. For example, “The Kiss” is a depiction of raw passion as well as an encoded work on the political alliances with France. He helped rouse patriotic spirit by using medieval allegories.
