Winter Harmony is an oil-on-canvas landscape by American painter John Henry Twachtman. The National Gallery of Art dates it to somewhere between 1890-1900. It depicts a stream curling back through snow banked woods on grounds that Twachtman owned near Greenwich, Connecticut. He painted this land repeatedly across different seasons. The painting’s color scheme relies largely on cool, light hues including white, gray, blue, lilac, and golden beige. The colors are applied with loose brushwork- this leaves individual strokes apparent, giving the image a soft, slightly blurred effect.
Twachtman was born in 1853 to German immigrants in Cincinnati. He trained in Munich and Venice with Frank Duveneck. Upon his move to Connecticut, his color perception remained largely tonalist. But his brushwork had evolved to be more fluid, gravitating towards Impressionism. This transformation was influenced by the constraints set by James McNeill Whistler, as well as the two-dimensional, decorative space typical of Japanese woodblock prints while he resided in Paris. Historians classify Winter Harmony within the tonalist movement. The tonalist movement prioritizes mood and near-abstraction over detailed description, treating color harmony similarly to a musical composition. Whistler promoted this approach, which clearly influenced Twachtman. Twachtman put the feeling into words himself, writing to fellow painter J. Alden Weir that snow made "the whole earth seem wrapped in a mantle," everything hushed to silence, a line critics still cite to explain why the winter scenes read as meditative rather than merely observational.
