Wind God and Thunder God

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Artizon Museum, Tokyo, Japan

Maeda Seison's Wind God and Thunder God shows two Japanese gods in one vertical composition. The Wind God is in the upper part of the painting and the Thunder God is positioned below him. Instead of putting the figures in a usual balanced way Seison makes the picture feel full of motion by placing the two gods at different heights and letting their bodies and the shapes around them fill the vertical space. The Wind God is shown with his back partly facing the viewer, which makes the figure feel strange and surprising. The Thunder God below has a different look and the two figures seem to talk to each other through where they are placed instead of touching each other. Their exaggerated bodies, poses and flowing shapes make the painting feel full of energy and almost playful. Seison was responding to an important tradition in Japanese art. Pictures of the Wind God and Thunder God were well known because artists from the Rinpa tradition like Tawaraya Sōtatsu, Ogata Kōrin and Sakai Hōitsu had painted them before. Seison liked this style. He did not copy the old pictures. Instead he made his way to arrange the gods and changed how they looked and how they stood. This painting is very interesting because of the difference between its theme and the new way it is done. The gods come from religion and art but Seison shows them with simple lively shapes and clear lines. Ink is very important in making the figures and the clouds, around them stand out and small spots of color make parts of the picture pop. For me the work shows how a modern Japanese artist can take a traditional theme and make it new. The way the gods are placed and the way they move makes the painting feel full of life of serious. It mixes Japanese images with Seison's own way of using lines, movement and how the picture is put together.
