Wang Xizhi watching geese

Artist:Qian Xuan
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA

"Wang Xizhi Watching Geese" by Qian Xuan depicts the "Sage of Calligraphy" leaning on a pavilion railing, gazing at a pair of geese swimming in a stream. The birds’ fluid, curving necks famously inspired Wang's mastery of the calligraphic brush. Painted in an archaic, dreamlike "blue-and-green" style, the handscroll features vivid mineral pigments of azurite and malachite overlaying crisp, stylized rock structures. Qian Xuan, a scholar-recluse under Mongol rule, used this nostalgic landscape to express historical dislocation, blending historical lore with a serene, politically disengaged world of spiritual and artistic retreat.
