Visitation

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy
Location History:Commissioned in the first decade of the 16th century by the Congrega della Visitazione, "Visitation" was originally created for an altar in Florence’s Oratorio di San Michele Vecchio. It was later moved to the Chiesa di San Michele in Palchetto, where Giorgio Vasari documented it. The masterpiece permanently joined the Medici-Lorraine collections in 1786 and has been displayed in the Uffizi Gallery ever since.

Mariotto Albertinelli was a student of the great Cosimo Rosselli in Florence and created his best High Renaissance painting of that time. This particular painting - Visitation presents the meeting of Virgin Mary and her relative ,Elizabeth under a classical arcade and garden which represents the harmony of architecture as it further mirrors the emotional gravity of the painting. Visitation is the collaborative work with Fra Baratlomeo and Albertinelli. They both were of different temperaments and despite having differences their work complemented each other. They created many art pieces, however Visitation is their last work as partners. In the same way that their best work was their last work together. This significant characteristic changes the perspective of the viewer and learns to never give up on a collaborative work and encourages strangers to come together and share different ideas and never stop creating.
