Fan Kuan's painting Travelers Among Mountains and Streams, which was produced in the Northern Song dynasty, is a great example of Chinese landscape painting and reflects the Chinese philosophical idea of the harmony between humanity and nature. It shows a huge mountain breaking suddenly from the mist, with small human figures and a group of travelers going along a narrow path at the foot of the mountain. The fact that the figures are so small stresses the tremendous magnificence and timelessness of nature.
To create an effect of depth, Fan Kuan makes use of monumental composition, atmospheric perspective, and carefully observed textures. In the painting the mountain fills the upper part, while the waterfalls, trees, rocks, and mist guide the viewer's eye through the landscape. The detailed brushwork on the surface of the mountain gives it a rugged and almost monumental appearance.
Instead of showing nature in a merely decorative way, Fan Kuan represents it as a powerful and spiritual force; the small size of the travellers indicates where humanity stands within a much greater natural order. The painting thus embodies the Daoist and Confucian notion of harmony between humans and the natural world, and by means of its huge scale and meditative atmosphere it turns the landscape into a meditation on permanence, humility and the relationship between humanity and nature.
