Three women are depicted in the painting of which two are widows and one is married. All of them perform rituals. According to some scholars, the national movement in India somewhat elevated the status of widows. The image of woman by the artists of the Bengal school represented the values that the women were supposed to personify. Free from the chains of their household, women, married or widowed fought with gusto against the colonial rule. Such artworks thus inspired and transformed society.
