One of the most influential figures of the Russian avant -garde, Natalia Goncharova initially trained as a sculptor. later turning to painting, she developed a highly original visual language by combining Russian folk art, Orthodox icon painting, lubok prints, and peasant traditions with modern European movements such as Cubism and Futurism. In The Weaver, she uses the visual language of Cubo-Futurism to fuse the figure of the woman with the rigid structure of the loom, presenting industrialization as a force that reduces the worker to an extension of the machine.
