The Virgin and Child

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Tempera
Current Location: Jacquemart-André Museum, Paris

The Renaissance was an age of artistry that signalled in the advent of the ideals of humanism and serenity from humanity. The piece here displays that in perfect accordance with these ideals. Baldovinetti portrays the virgin here as an angelic figure presiding over a baby looking up at her with innocence and wonder. It shows clearly the reverence for humanistic perspectives and people such as the Virgin mother that arose at the time. The colors used in the painting also showcase a very traditionally renaissance era color pallette choice that was quite popular at the time.
