Magnasco’s technique was centuries ahead of its time, prefiguring the expressive brushwork of Romanticism and early Expressionism. By applying thin, nervous dabs and flecks of loaded pigment over a dark ground, the surface vibrates with perpetual motion. The physical act of painting mirrors the instability of the sea itself. The water dissolves into jagged strokes of foam, and the figures seem woven from the very fabric of the storm, reinforcing the sense of an ephemeral, fleeting vision.
