There is this illustration by Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, which people generally refer to as The Stupid Tiger with the Ingredients of Pithey, from Tuntunir Boi, his classic children's book from 1910. There’s one of the funnier stories in the book where this tiger keeps showing up looking huge and intimidating, and then immediately shows he’s got nothing going on upstairs. He craves pithey, that Bengali rice cake they all grew up eating, and every time he tries to get some, some common villager makes a fool of him.
The wonderful thing about the illustration is that it's not only a verbal joke, it's a visual one too. The tiger is drawn big, almost puffed up on purpose, but the moment you look at his face or the way he is standing, you can tell there is nothing scary here at all. That’s really the whole joke. He looks like a dangerous man and acts like a clown. Ray Chowdhury does not make him out to be someone to fear; he makes him feel like a person almost, vain, a little slow, the kind of character you laugh at rather than run from. It's sort of a recurring thing in his work, to give animals these very human hang-ups, to want things, to worry, to trip over their own pride.
It’s not just filler being thrown in the pithhey ingredients too. It makes the whole scene relatable to any kid reading this, it’s a smell they would instantly know, that smell of home, that domestic warmth. Makes the story feel intimate rather than remote. And the drawing itself has this nice looseness to it, careful but never stiff, so every little gesture and prop scattered around the tiger is doing something, adding to the story rather than just sitting there looking pretty.
That’s what made him a good illustrator in all honesty. His pictures weren't just to interrupt the text. They did real work, building the characters, landing the punchline sometimes before a kid even got done reading the line. And that gap is what makes him vulnerable to anyone smarter than him, which in these stories is basically everyone. The tiger lands so well as a joke because of that mismatch, huge body, empty head.
Underneath the veil of humour, Upendrakishore provides a moral lesson that being big and strong doesn’t mean one is smart, and someone who looks weak on the surface can still win through wit alone.
