Created in the Academic style, the painting depicts the biblical miracle described in the Gospel of John where Jesus Christ raises Lazarus from the dead four days after his burial. It captures the dramatic moment when life returns to Lazarus, transforming a sacred narrative into a divine visual spectacle. Lazarus appears wrapped in burial cloths, stepping out from the darkness of the tomb towards the light of resurrected life. The composition of figures are carefully organized to direct the viewer's attention from commanding position of Jesus to Lazarus. The calm and authorative presence of Jesus contrast sharply with the astonished and emotionally excited witnesses. The contrast between the darkness of the sepulcher and the illumination falling upon Lazarus reinforces the Christian belief of Jesus' miracle triumphing over death. The two figures kneeling beside Jesus are Mary and Martha, sisters of Lazarus. When Jesus arrives in Bethany after Lazarus' death, grief stricken sisters go to Jesus for his help, who then commands the dead man to come forth from the grave. Some figures appear astonished, some fearful, and some others filled with reverence. Bonnat pays careful attention to facial expressions and gestures, creating a wide range of human emotions while the miracle happens. He also portrayed the figures as tangible human beings inhabiting a physical space, because of this the emotional impact of the event occurs believable rather than a distant dream. The color palette consists of earthy browns, muted reds, and flesh tones in the composition, lending the scene a sense of gravity and realism. Rather than presenting a divine vision detached from everyday experience, Bonnat humanizes the biblical figures creating a work that continues to resonate with viewers as both a religious statement and an artistic achievement.
