The upper half of the painting is its opposite entirely lush, paradisiacal, filled with peacocks, cranes, flowering rocks, and dense trees. What makes the painting visually extraordinary is the tension between control and wildness the artist has given the chaos of the water an almost decorative beauty, making it terrifying and gorgeous at the same time. That ambivalence is very Mughal. In one sentence: a holy man walks calmly into a dark, impossible sea to save a drowning prince, and the painting asks you to believe, just from his stillness, that he will.
