"The Prisoner" by Nikolai Alexandrovich Yaroshenko is an evocative painting that evokes feelings of solitude and of being trapped in a place with no way out. At the same time, the glimpse of the outside world through the window shows the prisoner what he is missing: he can see it, but he cannot experience it. Standing facing the window and being bathed in light, while the remainder of his room behind him is shrouded in darkness, makes it feel as though he is standing in a liminal space, a border, if you will, between light and darkness, solitude and society, and between freedom and imprisonment.
