The Philosophers

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia.

Depicted in the painting are the two Russian philosophers, Pavel Florensky (left) and Sergei Bulgakov (right). This portrait was commented upon by Bulgakov to be "a spiritual vision of an era" as he believed the artist had managed to capture their contrasting personalities with reference to the pulse of Russia's culture and philosophical discourse at the time. The painting began its creation in 1917, at Pavel Florensky's garden in the Russian city Sergiev Posad. The contrast between Florensky and Bulgakov is apparent as the former is dressed in white robes while the latter is in a dark black suit. Their contrast creates a very interesting balance in the painting and heightens the visual interest. The personalities of the two men are made clear within the conversation they are having: Bulgakov staring intensely ahead while trying to express his inner thoughts articulately while Florensky's head is bowed, listening intently and calmly to his friend. Both of them are theologians, but Florensky is a priest and this is made clear through his robes and the peaceful expression of pondering he is captured in. This work was painted towards twilight which explains the rosy sky and shaded background behind them. These men were involved in the discourse of the feminization of phenomena and abstract concepts such as nature and wisdom. Sophia, the Divine Wisdom or the lady of Wisdom was discussed at length along with femininity and motherhood in both religious and Symbolist artist circles which may have been their topic of discussion at this time. The composition of this work is also unique as it is a double portrait, something that was termed in Renaissance times. This adds further to the aesthetic value of this painting.
