The Moon and the Flowers

Artist:Koga Harue
Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

Harue Koga’s The Moon and the Flowers transforms the natural world into a psychologically charged, dreamlike space where botanical forms and celestial presence exceed ordinary perception. The juxtaposition of flowers and moonlight creates a tension between organic vitality and cosmic distance, while the stylised arrangement unsettles conventional distinctions between foreground and background, interiority and landscape. Koga’s surrealist sensibility makes nature appear less like an external reality than a projection of emotional and imaginative experience. The flowers acquire an almost sentient presence, and the moon becomes more than a source of illumination: it functions as a distant, enigmatic consciousness, turning the composition into an exploration of solitude, desire, and the fragile boundary between the visible world and the unconscious.
