The mother, with her expression of authority and grip of restraint, reinforces the reality that the marriage between the nobleman and the daughter will be agreed to as a transaction and that the nobleman's social status will be purchased by way of merchant gold. The father is awkwardly adjusting his traditional dress in the rear of the painting while exhibiting his discomfort with the high-society customs that he is attempting to replicate.
