The King Forgives His Chamberlain is a work by the great painter Anant, created in Agra between 1595 and 1600. It presents a touching narrative about governance, sympathy, and cosmic justice contained in the story of Husayn Va'izi Kashifi's Anvar-i Suhayli (Lights of Canopus). Done in vivid opaque watercolours, gold, and fine ink along with beautiful Nasta'liq calligraphy, this painting turns an ancient allegory into an outstanding imperial artwork of the Akbari period. It presents the image of a generous king who first sends away from his court his own chamberlain for no reason; later, the desperate steward is discovered stealing in the king's palace. Understanding that the theft has been committed out of hunger only, the king pardons the chamberlain and reinstates him in the king's court. With its typical Anant's multi-layered composition, the painting divides the action into two parts, displaying the political manoeuvrings and robbery at the top, and the justice of the king on the bottom, which can be seen as a kind of commentary on the responsibilities of the king and the danger of acting in haste. With this painting, Anant successfully demonstrates both the weakness of people and the generosity of royalty. This painting skillfully combines the literary court style of Persia with the visual realism of the Mughal period, using architectural details, colour contrasts, and facial expressions to show that true sovereignty consists in moral mercy.
The painting seems to represent governance through the characters' stature. It features several characters: the king, the chamberlain, and a viceroy who addresses the king, asking why the people depicted in the painting's background are so anxious. The viceroy replies that these people do not have enough livelihood to sustain them, and if the king takes their food, they will taunt him by asking him to survive a day on their livelihood.
