The hostages of Crema

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Civic Museum of Crema and the Cremasco area, Crema
Location History:The piece is owned by the Academy of Brera and has been housed in the Civic Museum of Crema since 1961, following a first attempt by the painter Carlo Martini in 1953 to obtain the deposit for the community. In a distinctly divisive manner, the same museum also preserves the disegno of Previati Cristo and the apostoli.

This painting not only showcases a historical event but also displays the cruelty of power and the fragility of human dignity. The prisoners are being used as an instrument of war, their exposed and vulnerable body shows helplessness and dehumanization that happens in a war. The golden light that is falling on the bodies doesn't feel heroic revelation but it feels tragic and sacred. The composition in this Previati's painting is crowded, depicting that the figures are not individualized heroes; they represent collective human sufferings. Although the painting portrays a medieval history, yet the emotional message is timeless.
