This remarkable oil painting on canvas is painted by the Italian artist Jacopo Amigoni, somewhere in the early 1700s. Known for his Venetian Rococo style, Amigoni created paintings, prints, frescoes, and even decorated vaults and palace walls. This piece in particular corresponds to the Christian legend of Saint Veronica, who during Christ's ascent to Mount Calvary with the cross; had wiped his sweaty and bloody face with her white veil. Miraculously Christ's face had imprinted on the fabric and thereby became an important holy relic. In this painting, we are presented with the sight of four inconsolable angels who are crying holding Veronica's veil in light of his divine sacrifice. The image is set against a dark background which highlights the subject matter. Veronica's veil hangs on a wooden hanger as the three destitute angels present in the foreground weep. One of them is standing on the right, clutching the sacred veil in one of his hands, while the other hand is in an open gesture. The second angels is seen kneeling on the left and kissing the veil. The third one is sat on the stair and is wiping his teary face. The fourth angel however, is seemingly hidden by the stark darkness and is also found crying inconsolably. Meanwhile, Christ's face on the veil carries a calm expression and seems like an illusion. The overall treatment of the figures in this picture is soft and light when compared to the striking theatricality of Baroque art. The artist has employed painting techniques like - the rococo luminosity and soft tonal transitions between colors to achieve the vivid and mystical feel of this piece.
