The album was created by Sita Ram during Lord Hastings’ journey through India in 1814–1815. The album was later sold at Sotheby’s in London in 1974, after which its individual paintings were dispersed. The British Library acquired The Great Gun of Agra in 1986, where it is currently held as Add. Or. 4311

Sita Ram’s The Great Gun at Agra presents a picturesque yet informative view of Agra, combining its natural landscape, urban architecture, and everyday life. The artwork shows a wide river, which may be identified as the Yamuna, reinforcing the setting suggested by the title. Across the river, a distant cityscape can be seen, while the fort walls in the lower right provide a strong architectural element and suggest Agra’s imperial past. A small white, tomb-like structure stands near the river, contrasting with the surrounding earthy landscape. Groups of people appear to be gathering and collecting water from the river, introducing everyday social activity into the scene. On the left, Sita Ram depicts a more village-like setting, with simple buildings, trees, and people.
