The Gopis Arrive at the Kalindi River to Worship the Goddess Katyayani

Artist:Fattu
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Cincinnati Art Museum (Cincinnati, Ohio, USA)
Location History:Originating from the Pahari royal court workshops of the Northwest Himalayas in Northern India, the folio was created as part of the celebrated "Fifth" or "Large Guler-Basohli" Bhagavata Purana series. It eventually transitioned from private royal collections into international art circulation before being acquired by the Cincinnati Art Museum.

This 18th-century Pahari painting presents the gopis of Vrindavan undertaking the Katyayani Vrata, a devotional episode from the Bhagavata Purana. The composition is simple yet carefully balanced: the group of women moves rhythmically across the landscape, while the large central tree acts as a visual divider and anchors the scene. Their graceful profiles, delicate gestures and fine outlines reflect the refined Kangra-Pahari idiom. Bright red, yellow, green and pink garments enliven the otherwise restrained landscape of blue sky, ochre hills and green fields. The ritual objects carried by the gopis establish the devotional context, while their movement towards the Yamuna suggests both physical and spiritual preparation. Beyond its narrative function, the painting conveys the Vaishnava idea of complete surrender to Krishna. The calm landscape and orderly procession transform an everyday journey into a poetic expression of devotion, longing and spiritual aspiration.
