Created in 1889, The Founding of Mexico City is an oil painting by Mexican artist José María Jara. It was painted for one of the competitions held by the National Fine Arts School dedicated to Mexican history, which aimed to contribute to building a national identity through visual imagery. For the year the painting was created, the theme was the legend of the Mexica tribe’s search for a place to build their new temple and city. In the painting, the Mexica leader Tenoch takes up a prominent spot in the composition. On his left is a priest offering divine guidance, while on his right is a woman holding a baby, symbolising a new life after settling down. The painting was painted with great expressiveness and realism, earning Jara the first prize in the competition. https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/AgHGcWyHObzuqA
