The painting depicts a 1567 episode in Chunar where Mughal noble Asaf Khan rebelled against Akbar and joined a faction led by 'Ali Quli Khan and Bahadur Khan. Disaffected, Asaf Khan attempted to flee but was captured and imprisoned in an elephant litter. His brother Wazir Khan then attacked the rebels and successfully freed him, with the elephant litter prominently featured in the foreground. The composition is densely packed with figures and exudes a strong sense of movement and dramatic action. Mounted soldiers, archers, and swordsmen surge across the picture plane, creating a vivid panorama of combat. In the foreground, a richly decorated elephant carrying a royal canopy serves as a narrative focal point. This elephant litter is where the shackled Asaf Khan was confined, acting as a visual anchor for the tumultuous scene. Horses adorned with elaborate trappings charge and manoeuvre, with their riders wielding swords, bows, and shields amidst the fierce fighting. The colour palette is characteristically vibrant, featuring bright reds, blues, greens, and gold leaf that enliven the costumes, armour, weapons, and horse gear, showcasing the refinement and jewel-like quality of the early Mughal miniature style. The level of detail in the costumes, weapons, and equestrian gear is meticulous, reflecting the high production standards of Akbar's imperial workshop.
The background contrasts sharply with the violence of the melee. Trees, gardens, shrubs, and a fortified city or fort rise behind the combatants, depicted in the serene and decorative style typical of Mughal landscape art. This juxtaposition of a tranquil landscape with brutal action highlights the disruption caused by warfare and rebellion, illustrating how both the natural and built environments are affected by treachery. The vertical format of the painting enhances the compressed energy of the composition, allowing the viewer to take in the full sweep of the battle from an elevated perspective.
The image features two bands of Persian text in nasta'liq script, identifying the event and connecting it to the Akbarnama's historical narrative.
