It was created in India during the late Mughal period, 1705–1720 A.D., and the painting later entered private collections before being acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art through the Louis V. Bell Fund (2003), where it is now preserved.
The Emperor Aurangzeb's Carried on a Palanquin is one of the most celebrated works by Bhavanidas, a distinguished painter who worked first in the Mughal imperial atelier and later became the leading artist of the Kishangarh court.
