The Devi Rides in State

Kripal of Nurpur was a pioneering artist who laid the foundation for the distinct visual style of Pahari miniature painting. He is generally recognised with intense emotional scenarios that defined early Pahadi painting. His foundational work was the Rasamanjari series. The above painting “The Devi Rides in State” stands as a monumental masterpiece by him. This painting visualises the Goddess Durga depicting her not just as a reclusive ascetic or cosmic force, but as a sovereign advancing in magnificent triumphal splendor. At the centre is the royal chariot carrying Devi Durga. She is multi-armed holding a bow, arrow and raised sword which symbolises her readiness to destroy cosmic evil and protect her subjects. Seated behind her is a companion deity holding additional material attributes. Chatra stands firmly as a symbol of absolute sovereignty. The chariot is drawn by two tigers rather than traditional horses. Leading the entire procession is a dark-skinned guardian figure—likely a form of Kali or Bhairava—who marches ahead with a raised sword, a trident (trishula) banner, and a ritual skull cup (kapala), clearing the path for the divine sovereign. The flat monochromatic background with brilliant yellow eliminates deep spatial perspective. It deliberately forces viewers’ eyes entirely towards the figures. The large stylized lotus-petal eyes show similarity with temple sculptures. Kripal, the artist uses deeply saturated and contrasting primary pigments to create an energetic atmosphere of divinity. The painting should not be taken only as a religious icon, rather it reflects the political landscape of 17th century Himalayan hill states. By depicting the Goddess as ruling monarch, the painter connects their might with the local Rajput rulers who patronized Shakta devotion.
