The Construction of Agra Fort Tulsi the Younger, for the Akbarnama, c 1590–1595 The image does far more than simply present one great architectural achievement, it rejoices in human collaboration for the benefit of great ambition. In fact, by leaving the Emperor himself quite empty the image presents numerous laborers and supervisors, engineers and brick layers, masons laying blocks of stone, woman carrying material and animals dragging stone. It reveals the amazing cooperation and communication skills needed to construct great monuments and the image becomes a narrative in collaboration, discipline and order, in the pursuit of imperialism as a whole and shows that empires are formed by numerous unseen hands. In doing so the creator honors the unseen daily activities of the masses making this an extremely significant narrative and, for me, shows how without visible labour, that collaboration, skill and shared intent and dedication the grandeur could not have been realised nor been built in stone for posterity.
