The Blessing of the Table

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Museo Nacional de Arte
Location History:The origin of the work is unknown but it appears in the registers of the old San Carlos Academy in 1916 CE, where, it has been attributed to Miguel Cabrera. As Alcibar spent decades working directly inside Cabrera's workshop, his style was profoundly shaped by his mentor, thus a dispute regarding the authorship emerged. Later archival corrections and research work resolved the authorship debate surrounding the painting. This work passed to the National Museum collection from the San Diego Viceregal Painting Gallery in the year 2000.

This painting named The Blessing of the Table is made by artist José de Alcíbar, and I really like it because it looks so holy and peaceful. In my opinion, the scene is very nice, where young Jesus is sitting in the center chair with light behind his head, raising his right hand to give prayer blessing before eating food. Mother Mary and Saint Joseph are sitting beside him, joining hands together with big respect. On the dining table, there is white neat cloth with bread, fish plates, and cups arranged nicely. Many angels with wings are helping around them, like two angels serving food plates, and small cute baby angels playing with flowers basket on the floor. The artist has used soft colours and shiny shadows, which makes the whole family look full of grace and true devotion
