Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770) was one of the greatest painters and a leading master belonging to the Venetian school during the 18th century Europe. Under the training of Gregorio Lazzarini, he developed his own extravagant, theatrical style influenced by the masters of Renaissance, especially Veronese, and went on to combine the brilliant colour, movement, imagination, and light. He executed a vast programme of frescoes at the Würzburg Residenz (1750–53), one of his major achievements, where he trasnformed the architectural setting into dramatic mythological and allegorical scenes using illusionistic perspective. Then in 1761, Tiepolo shifted to Madrid for decorating the Royal Palace for the Spanish court. He worked there until his death with his two sons— Giovanni Domenico and Lorenzo. He was an influential printmaker and draftsman who demonstrated his capricci and scherzi with extraordinary creativity. Even though his paintings were no longer popular after the arrival of Neoclassicism, his unique style of frescos and oil sketches had a lasting effect on the development of European painting.
“The Banquet of Cleopatra” by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was one of the finest Venetian paintings created around 1743-44 (mid-18th century), reflecting a strong blend of history, drama, and theatrical grandeur. The painting is inspired by Pliny the Elder’s Natural History, that narrates the famous bet between Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, and the Roman general Mark Antony. Cleopatra boastfully claims that she can offer an exceptionally luxurious banquet and proves it by dissolving her priceless pearl earring in vinegar and drinking it, resulting in her winning the contest and shocking Antony.
Giovanni shows the climax of this scene with elegant movements and style, with Cleopatra sitting noticeably on a staircase under a classical portico. Antony is draped in red, appearing in a state of surprise. The surrounding figures of servants, noblemen, court dwarf, a playful dog and a rebellious white horse make the composition more lively. This artwork is a prime example of Tiepolo’s masterful composition, expressive brushstrokes, the play of colours and light— delicate pinks, creams, reds, and golds create an airy atmosphere. The fresco was painted for the series in Palazzo Labia, Venice. Giovanni transformed an ancient historical event into a splendour of wealth, power, and romance upon bbeing influenced by Veronese’s banquets.

What really makes this painting special is the fact that it carries a historical weight which might of great interest to many scholars. As far as Tiepolo's skilfulness is concerned, his play of colours is worthy of praise. The painting is nothing short of a masterpiece, featuring delicate colours which offer a calm effect soothing to the eye of the viewers.
