The Assumption of the Virgin

Giovanni Battista Piazzetta was an Italian painter of the Rococo period known for his artworks on religious subjects. He was the son of a sculptor, due to his father’s profession, he also gained training in wood carving. Giovanni was largely influenced by the works of Giuseppe Maria Crespi, a Bolognese Baroque painter. ‘The Assumption of the Virgin’ is one such religious painting that depicts the scene of Mary, mother of Christ reaching to the heaven according to the Catholic beliefs. There are also angels visible supporting her to rise in the sky and the saints below stand in reverence around the empty tomb. Saint Peter is also seen trying to get hold of the Virgin’s foot as the whole atmosphere is illuminated by this miracle. A smaller painting of the sketch was commissioned for the Church of St. James in Prague. Piazzetta seems to have used very warm, rich and earthy tones to create a connection between Heaven and Earth. He has also showcased shadows to bring liveliness to the human figures and their physique. The moment has been painted with much heaviness and controlled brushstrokes which becomes evident through the portrayal of hair, faces and fabric of the garments.
