The Arrival of the Turkey from Goa

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom
Location History:Originally part of an illustrated album from Jahangir's reign, later dismembered. This page was bequeathed to the V&A in 1921 by Lady Wantage.

This painting highlights the prosperity of the Mughal Empire with the presence of the gold leaf surrounding the turkey. The importing of unusual animals also shows how Jahangir held great curiosity for these new and unfamiliar things.
