“Tethered Camel and Rider” is a unique work of watercolour art, made by the esteemed Mughal Artist, Mir Sayyid Ali. Mir Sayyid Ali was originally from Tabriz, born in 1510, and became a painter in the Safavid Persian court under Shah Tahmasp I, before becoming a part of the Mughal court when the Mughal Emperor Humayun, while taking refuge in Persia, was captivated by his artwork and brought him alongside him to Kabul in 1549. This work in particular was made in 1535, and thus was produced while he was under the Persian court. The work is a folio from an album, and features a poem on the verse side, written by the calligrapher Mir `Ali Haravi. The painting is made using opaque watercolours, and focuses on a tether camel and a man, likely the rider. The man is wearing a red and white colour patterned Safavid turban, yellow coloured top and baggy white pants. The camel is shown tethered to a tree stump by its legs, and has some bells tied to its forelegs. The duo are walking in a rather arid area, based on the small tufts of grass and shrubbery, and the rocks scattered throughout the ground.
In the painting, the tone of the artwork is slightly aggressive because of the conflict between the camel and its master. The narrow range of colours enables the lines of the picture to be visually significant. The mixture of linear drawings, flat composition, floral decoration, and detailing makes the painting typical of Persian miniature paintings. Moreover, it helps to create a visual hierarchy.
