An Indian woman draped in a white and blue saree sips chai while working at a charkha. This advertisement by Anna Munshi for the Indian Tea Market Expansion Bureau was aimed at encouraging consumption and support of Indian goods. Such advertisements depicted tea as a factor that unified the masses and was advertised as a source of daily pleasure. The charkha or the spinning wheel refers to Gandhi's swadeshi campaign. The role of media shines through such campaigns as India is now one of the largest exporters and consumers of tea worldwide.
