Tao Gu Presenting a Lyric

Artist:Tang Yin
Support Type: Silk
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: National Palace Museum

Tao Gu Presenting a Lyric by Tang Yin depicts a historical episode in which the arrogant envoy Tao Gu is asked to present a lyric by Qin Jo-lan, who intends to expose his vanity. The intimate interior, with the daybed, screens, bamboo and plants, creates a refined setting that reflects the cultured world of the literati. Tang Yin combines careful colouring with controlled composition and delicate details, showing the influence of earlier Song and Yuan painting traditions while retaining his own style. The added poem strengthens the moral meaning of the scene, suggesting that pride and misuse of status can lead to humiliation. The work therefore goes beyond illustrating a story and becomes a reflection on vanity, integrity and humility, ideas that remain meaningful even today.
