Tabby Cat (Madaraneko), painted in 1924 by Takeuchi Seihō, is one of the most famous works of modern Nihonga painting and is regarded as the artist's masterpiece. Seihō was a leading painter from Kyoto who helped modernize traditional Japanese painting while preserving its elegance and attention to nature. He was especially known for his animal paintings, which reflected his habit of carefully observing living creatures rather than relying solely on imagination or artistic conventions. His works often combine technical precision with a deep appreciation for personality and spirit of his subjects. The inspiration for "Tabby cat" came during Seihō's travels in Numazu, where he noticed a cat at a vegetable shop. The animal reminded him of a cat depicted by the Chinese Song dynasty emperor Huizong, inspiring him to pain it. Seihō reportedly brought the cat back to Kyoto and spent a long time sketching, photographing, and studying its movements before completing the work. The painting shows the cat grooming itself while gazing directly at the viewer with striking greenish blue eyes. Set against a plain background, the animal becomes the sole focus of attention, creating an intimate connection between the viewer and the subject. The realism of the painting is extraordinary. Seihō build the cat's soft fur through delicate layers of black ink, ochre pigments, and gofun, a traditional white pigment made from oyster shells. The eyes were enhanced using mineral pigments and touches of gold on delicate silk, giving them remarkable depth and life. through its simplicity, careful observation, and masterful technique, the "Tabby Cat" transforms an everyday animal into a timeless and unforgettable work of art.
