Street Scene in Paris
Artist:Felix Vallotton
| Support Type: | Paper |
| Paint Type: | Gouache |
| Current Location: | Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York |
| Location History: | The painting was originally part of the estate of Felix Vallotton, where it was recorded in 1925 as "Scene de la vie parisienne." In 1926, it entered the collection of Galerie Vallotton in Lausanne, where it remained until approximately March 1929. On 7 March 1929, the work was acquired by the Paris gallery Druet and recorded in its stock as no. 12504 under the title "Rue de Paris." Between April and May 1929, it was purchased by the Paris collector Henri Cahen, who owned the painting until his death in 1937. The work was then probably inherited by his descendants and remained in the family until it was sold at the Galerie Charpentier auction in Paris on 6 April 1960. Later that year, it was acquired by the Zurich art dealer Marianne Feilchenfeldt, from whom Robert Lehman purchased it on 4 October 1960. |
Street Scene in Paris captures the rhythm and elegance of everyday urban life, transforming an ordinary street into a lively visual experience. The artist highlights the interaction between people, architecture, and movement, creating a sense of harmony within the city's busy atmosphere. The composition reflects Paris as a place of culture, history, and human connection, where daily routines become moments of quiet beauty. To me, the artwork suggests that even the most familiar surroundings hold stories worth noticing. It encourages viewers to appreciate the charm of everyday life and reminds us that cities are shaped not only by buildings but also by the people who bring them to life.
