Among the many disciples of Abindranath Tagore, one remarkable personality was that of Krshitindranath Majumdar, an artist who combined great technical skill with spirituality in his art. He played a major role in shaping the nation's modernism aesthetic and was the contemporary of Nandlal Bose. The most fascinating characteristic of his work is the art of wash painting, a Japanese technique. He became a significant figure in Indian art history not just for his talent but also for the way he employed this method to capture the feelings of Vaishnava traditions and the spirit of ancient Sanskrit poetry. Drawing inspiration from epic works of the Ramayana and Bhagavata Purana, Kshitindranath Majumdar painted with the devotion of a seeker of truth and came to be called a saint artist. The beauty in his paintings lies in the slender human figures and delicate colour palette of porcelain-like elegance. The work “Shri Chaitanya Meets His Mother After Sanyas” embodies the very essence of the Bengal School of Art in its visual interpretation of the crucial event in the history of devotion. The painting reflects the moving farewell between Sri Chaitanya and his mother Sachi Mata before his ascetic renunciation in Santipura. There is even Advaita Prabhu in the background, adding some silent grief and witness to the sacrifice of the mother. Majumdar employs his unique technique of soft wash to give the picture a translucent and porcelain texture.
