Artist:Balchand
Support Type: Paper

Location History:The painting belongs to the Shahjahannama, an illustrated historical manuscript relating to the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The manuscript is preserved in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. The surviving folios of the manuscript contain numerous scenes documenting events and activities connected with Shah Jahan's reign. Balchand contributed to this important imperial painting project during his mature career.

Shah Jahan's Album leaf brings us into the fading light of a royal hunt, its composition unfolding as a vast diagonal sweep from the pale rising moon-like sun at upper left down through rolling scrubland to the emperor at lower right. The landscape itself does much of the narrative work: bare golden-brown earth dotted with tufts of green scrub, cultivated plots glimpsed at the edges, and a scattering of fleeing blackbuck and hare threaded through the middle distance, their white flanks catching light against the ochre ground. This isn't a wilderness so much as a managed hunting ground, staged and populated for the emperor's pleasure. Shah Jahan himself sits cross-legged on a raised platform, haloed by a radiant sunburst that marks him as more than mortal a favorite device of Mughal court painters asserting divine kingship. He takes aim with a long matchlock, steadied by an attendant kneeling before him, while a tight cluster of courtiers and gun-bearers waits behind, their green and gold robes providing a jewel-like counterpoint to the muted earth tones. The painting balances two registers of time: the panoramic, almost cartographic view of the hunting ground unfolding above, and the intimate, frozen instant of the shot below sport as both spectacle and imperial theater.
