Gaganendranath Tagore's "Veiled Woman" (also referred to as "A Woman with a Veil” and “ Shaded Flame") is an evocative portrait that showcases the subtleties of feminine beauty and emotion, and belongs to the broader context of his late-period engagement with mysterious, spectral female figures. Gaganendranath Tagore was a nephew of the poet Rabindranath Tagore and elder brother of Abanindranath Tagore, and his artistic trajectory passed through several distinct phases: early landscapes and Japanese-influenced ink paintings (up to 1911); the Chaitanya and Pilgrim series (1911-1915); satirical caricatures (1915-1921); cubist experiments (1921-1925); and a final post-cubist phase (1925-1930). In his post-cubist period, Gaganendranath created paintings featuring "ghostlike veiled women ascending or descending spiral staircases leading into what appears like an abyss.”. These women are "anonymous with no volume or substance but immaterial, rather like shadows," appearing "less human, more phantom-like," and seeming to submit to "some superhuman force". The "Veiled Woman" exemplifies Gaganendranath's characteristic use of dramatic chiaroscuro, the interplay of light and dark, which he had developed progressively from his Japanese sumi-e ink paintings through to his cubist and post-cubist phases. Gaganendranath's interest in the play of light and shadow may be traced to multiple sources in his practice of photography; his engagement with Whistler's Nocturnes and Turner's luminism; and his theatrical experience designing stage sets, where criss-crossing light beams created cubist-planed effects.
